Roses

When we first moved into our house both gardens, front and back were really overgrown.  You had to push your way through a six-foot high bush to get to the front door.  It took a while but we finally have it looking nice … simple, pretty low maintenance, but nice.

There’s a picture of the front of the house pretty much as it is now in my post “Pot of Gold“.

We pulled up the huge bushes, along with three pine trees along the front which my mother-in-law assured me would grow to about thirty feet tall !

Once the bushes and weeds were gone, we could see a squarish lawn with a border around three sides and a diamond shape flowerbed in the centre.  The flower bed was filled in with topsoil and grass seeds planted then on turning our attention to the border we discovered a number of roses.  I “rescued” a  couple of tiny roses from underneath the adjoining hedge and we bought a few more to have an even spread of different coloured roses around the border, then in the gaps between I planted “just a couple of” daffodils.  Later we added a fence around the outside and a trellis next to and above the front door – and that’s pretty much how it stands now.

The rose above is one of my favourites, it’s a deep, dark pink colour, and one of the “rescued” roses.  The rose below is the base of an advertising board from the retail outlet we visited on my “Week off“.

  1. I like both too. Your pink rose is very pretty and looks really healthy. Is it a perfumed rose? I like the decorative ad stand – I would like one of those in the garden as a piece of sculpture. By the way, in answer to your question about black and white shots – things which are old or worn are good as are textures.

    • I’m not sure if the pink rose is perfumed or not, I’ve never noticed any scent comming from it and my nose is pretty sensitive to most smells.
The black one didn’t smell at all though 😀

  2. Sorry… I’ve just got bold and ‘stolen’ both your idea and post for my last year link… hope you don’t mind, after all, it was you who gave me the idea in the first place! 😉
